On August 7, at an airport in Kentucky, the women's basketball team of Kentucky State University lined up to check in for a trip to a tournament. One of them did not board. Aminata Seck, a 6-foot-4 center, was stopped there.

Days later, her name appeared on the detention roster of Grayson County, Kentucky. The column describing the reason for detention lists exactly one line: US DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY / ICE. No criminal charge. No timeline. No hearing date.

In years of hosting a podcast and logging box scores from lower-tier leagues, I always start with a specific piece of data and build the story from there. This time I have data: 11.7 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. And I have to admit it explains nothing about what is happening. Every result is a deliberate lie, including a stat sheet nobody bothers to read in Division II.

Seck is 26 years old, from Dakar, Senegal, and plays for Kentucky State, an HBCU in NCAA Division II, in the SIAC. She is a 6-foot-4 center who leads her team in both scoring and rebounding, posted five double-doubles this season, and scored a season-high 30 points against Lane College on January 14. She was named to the SIAC All-Conference Third Team and received the Elite 16 academic award, the conference's highest honor for a student-athlete.

Her medical file is thicker than her playing file: an ACL injury and back surgery. Attorney Sadiqa Reynolds said Seck may have missed a visa deadline tied to that back surgery, and that she is in significant pain while detained. She has also been recorded as being transferred across multiple detention facilities and at one point to a hospital.

Representative Morgan McGarvey of Kentucky has spoken publicly about the case. Kentucky State declined to comment, citing respect for the privacy of those involved.
