James Harden signs three-year Cleveland Cavaliers deal at 37: What the data says about his title ambition

The summer of 2026 began with an unusual decision: James Harden, at 37 years old, signed a new three-year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers. The deal makes Ohio the expected final stop of his NBA career. Harden joined Cleveland mid-season and averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists in 26 games. In the playoffs, he added 19.5 points and 5.5 assists over 18 games as the Cavaliers reached the Eastern Conference finals, where they were swept 0-4 by the eventual NBA champions, the New York Knicks. Cleveland believes Harden can solve their half-court offensive problems, especially when Donovan Mitchell faces heavy defensive pressure. Harden ranks 11th in career points and 12th in career assists, with a chance to enter the top 10 in both categories. The Cavaliers added Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets and Mario Hezonja from Real Madrid. Their projected starting lineup includes Harden, Mitchell, Watson, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The key question is whether Mitchell can play effectively off the ball while Harden runs the offense. This is not a farewell contract. It is a competitive statement from a franchise trying to turn data and experience into a championship.
