Timberwolves came knocking, Vezenkov still chooses Olympiacos: The NBA is not the final destination

The Minnesota Timberwolves called. Sasha Vezenkov did not need to hear the full pitch to know what his answer would be. According to The Stein Line, the Timberwolves recently explored the feasibility of bringing the Bulgarian forward back to the NBA. That inquiry happened shortly before Minnesota finalized a deal to acquire Jonathan Kuminga. No formal contract offer was made, because Vezenkov made it clear early that he had no desire to return to the United States. At 31, Vezenkov is a two-time EuroLeague MVP enjoying a stable, successful chapter with Olympiacos. For him, the decision was never about talent. It was about family, comfort and being valued in a place he calls home. “It’s tough now because here is my family, my life. With Olympiacos we won a lot of stuff. But in my life, I know it’s better to never say never,” Vezenkov told The Stein Line. That quote explains why the Timberwolves never got close to signing him. They were looking for a low-cost depth addition with European experience and shooting ability. Vezenkov was looking for a long-term project and full respect. Those two sides were never aligned. Vezenkov’s only NBA season came in 2026-24 with the Sacramento Kings. Under head coach Mike Brown, he played a minor role, averaging 5.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in 42 games while logging just 12.2 minutes per contest. For a player used to being the focal point of an offense, that was not enough time to adjust. He was eager to prove himself, but the circumstances did not allow it. Vezenkov later said he thinks it was “not a fair chance from both sides.” But he does not regret the experience. He learned a lot and improved his entire vision of the game. His one real regret is timing. He wishes he had tried the NBA earlier in his career, when he was younger and more adaptable. By the time he arrived in Sacramento, he was already an established European star. The NBA, however, wanted him to become something else: a limited-role role player. That mismatch is not unusual. Many European stars arrive in the NBA too late, or with the wrong role, and are judged unfairly as a result. The Timberwolves eventually moved on to Jonathan Kuminga, a younger and more athletic wing. On paper, that made sense. Minnesota needed speed and explosion. Vezenkov, at 31, offers intelligence and efficiency, but his game is built around a different rhythm. Still, this is not a failure for Vezenkov. He returned to Olympiacos, rediscovered his confidence and continued dominating at the EuroLeague level. He does not need the NBA to validate his career. He has already proven what he can do. The idea that every great European player must succeed in the NBA is outdated. Some players are simply better suited to the European game. Vezenkov is one of them. For the Timberwolves, the quick inquiry was just a small note in a larger roster-building process. They found their answer in Kuminga. For Vezenkov, the door to the NBA remains open in theory, but only on his own terms. “Never say never” leaves space for the unknown. But from where he stands today, Vezenkov is exactly where he wants to be: at home, with his family, playing for a club that truly values him. That is not a consolation prize. In his case, it is a victory.
