The route offers the usual 5 km, 10 km, half marathon 21 km and marathon 42 km distances, plus events for children and teams. The full 42 km course is the main challenge for recreational and semi-competitive runners, while the shorter routes invite families, children and first-timers. More importantly, the course is AIMS-certified for distance, meaning entrants can trust that it meets international road marathon standards for accuracy and safety. The 2026 destination is Can Gio. It is not a big city or a ready-made sporting hub; it is a coastal estuarine area with mangrove forest, sandbanks, canals and high humidity. For someone following many seasons like me, this terrain makes for a fascinating experience but also raises questions about pacing consistency. The shoreline route can mix sand, tree roots and bumpy sections, making absolute records unpredictable. In exchange, though, the mangrove landscape provides something that no Vietnamese inner-city route can replicate. In many ways this season is not about competitive ranking. There is no national record or Olympic berth at stake. But from an industry value perspective, this is a race with visible middle-level reach. HDBank is not standing outside the game; it is using its banking ecosystem to pull digital infrastructure into a traditional road race. Features such as Green Marathon online, eKYC authentication through an app and various interactive elements along the route refresh the participant experience and create a layer of post-race engagement. Runners are no longer consumers of a result; they become part of a green marketing chain that runs for months. Alongside this, environmental engagement is a continuous thread. Over previous editions, more than 2,000 trees have been planted and beach clean-ups have been organised. These figures may seem modest, but they form a non-sporting dataset that gives the race a sustainable story rather than allowing it to become a one-day festival that appears and then fades. For a local-level event this is how organisers sustain attention from experts, sponsors and the running community. One point often understated in official materials is the potential meaning of participation volume in the fifth season. When a community race survives long enough, it creates a semi-elite layer of runners who use the 21 km and 42 km courses as annual progress markers. Data on the number and age of participants will matter more than any final sprint on the finish line. But the organiser has not yet released split data by age group or athlete category, making that observation only medium-confidence at best. In risk terms there is almost no alarm signal. AIMS standardises technical aspects; the Ho Chi Minh City Athletics Federation guarantees that the route follows national regulations; and because there are no elite qualification slots, doping or eligibility issues have little chance to arise. The biggest risk, as I see it, is disappointment among a segment of viewers who expect top-level performance but actually encounter a community and environmental race festival. That should not be treated as a flaw. In a country where recreational running still needs a robust ecosystem from the ground up, a community race with a clear framework, combined support from a corporation and a federation, has more long-term developmental value than a one-off competition among a handful of stars. The story of HDBank Green Marathon 2026 is not about which runner crosses the line first. It is about whether a 42 km road race can build long-term training commitment in ordinary people, and about whether digital integration can turn that commitment into a sustainable business model. If the organiser closely monitors app-usage metrics, repeat-participation rates and feedback from local residents, this event will give Vietnam’s marathon market a sustainable sports-business blueprint – something Vietnam needs more than extra medals.
